Spirituality/Paganism & Magick: Feature Article: In the Wee Hour with the Priest of the Serpent Mound by Tantra Bensko

Posted on Sunday, August 19, 2007 - 11:16 PM

Come with us, if you will, to a magickal place in Tennessee, where the serpent mound is home for dragons and faries - and where magick is always afoot.

In the Wee Hour with the Priest of the Serpent Mound

by Tantra Bensko

"S" is the Keeper of a large and secret Serpent Mound in rural Tennessee. He invited me to stay on the mound, and he told me its fascinating story: as soon as he came to this spot as a young man, he knew he was supposed to be here. The place had a 17-foot deep pit mine, which he filled-in and healed, using over 20,000 dump trucks of fill. Since then, he opened his land to many folks to live-on for free. He has aided countless people in understanding and living the Old Ways.

The land he keeps has on it a Serpent Mound, built by the River People, around 1000 AD, who came from Central America. When they foresaw invaders coming to the land, they encoded their secrets into symbols, migrating to spread their vast knowledge to those with the purity to be trusted with it. They became an auburn-haired, light-skinned, and light-eyed population, once they bred with the Celts who were already here. Just as in all the temples everywhere, they used sacred geometry to activate the ley lines and maintain the pulsation of the earth blood. The descendants of the mixed races were called Tomaquin, meaning Deer Medicine. They were part of the Creek Indian Nation. (Some of their descendants now live in Toma, FL.) The Tomaquins still revere this area as sacred.

Mounds were built at important intersections, or radiations, of the magnetic ley lines to collect, amplify, use, and connect the energies that crisscross the earth. The other realms are more tangible at these places. For example, apparitions of Mother Mary only occur at such junctures. The earthy and ethereal frequencies are vortexed together, so each realm may communicate with the other. People generally see more supernatural apparitions (including UFOs) in areas around mounds. Their stories are corroborated. Thus we see pictures on and around mounds of flying monstrous people, for example, which many people may have seen. Here, S has seen dragons and fairies, seeing, as he explains it, those symbols which are passed down through his genetic propensities. Others have seen a ghost horse here at various times.

On the mound is a "Wee house," each letter on its sign growing smaller, as he says one must do to go into the other realms, into Fairie. (Just as one must pass through the singularity, a tiny point. to come out through a white hole into another reality, so must one do in consciousness to enter their magical world.) On its sign is also a four-leaf clover, the doorway to the other world. His land is blessed with a four-leaf clover field!

This place does not show up normally on film. A retired Air Force colonel, who had gone into real estate, was flying over, taking aerial photos. Nothing showed up during the time the plane passed over the mound. County and state maps don't show this area truly at all. There is no relation to reality. This is a magical spot.

The serpent mound lies between a creek and a river. The two come together at the tail, which has a coiled magnetic circle at its center. The water running over the rocks, which contain many embedded crystals, creates great electromagnetic energy. Perhaps that is one reason why the mound was built here, as perhaps this energy flows through the ley lines. Crystals are accumulators of electricity, and were used in their elemental form for generating it for human use in the Atlantean and Egyptian times. Serpent (and dragon) mounds are made to vortex the energy and draw it into the land, stabilizing and vitalizing it, at the important nodes of the earth.

The mound serpent's mouth has open jaws. During the summer solstice the sun runs over the left jaw during the winter solstice the sun runs over the right jaw: during the equinoxes the sun moves from one end of the mound to the other. The indigenous people would pass through here at the time of the equinoxes, the time of the most beautiful weather, on their way to other mound territories. S found numerous artifacts when he restored the head of the serpent, which had eroded. Now, people come and drum here, at those holy times, where the lines from the sun cross at the center of the mound. Ritual is quite important in maintaining the land's ability to draw down the nurturing Life force. Perfectly intersecting this crossing point is the line that leads to his house. S built the wee house at that intersection.

At the tail is a coil from which numerous ley lines radiate. This would be perhaps the most important spot, the site for something like a sun disc, with its attendant Keeper of the Mound, or Pendragon. The Pendragon pins the dragon, stepping at the exact spot of the radiating ley lines to control the solar dragon's energy. Dragon energies are the magnetic currents in and above the earth. Actual dragons can be seen at certain spots. The Pendragon adds the sword, or acupuncture needle, to the node, and adds the spin to the circle, creating the link between the linear and non-linear. Only the pure of heart can accomplish this without encountering great danger. One must be ready.

Even here, around the Mound, are other smaller circles of ley lines radiating. This could be because of the way vortices of ley energies at such spots can divide like a zygote in mitosis. The small circles could also be remnants of ancient meditation circles.

About 10 years ago, S was doing a ritual with his friend, who was an androgynous Priest/Priestess. S kept hearing "Mother Earth is calling you, lay your body down" very clearly. He had been baptized in the other elements, but not yet in the earth. When he lay down, he "fell from his bodes" into the earth, as he used to do as a child every night. His body became totally limp. He felt as if he could be swimming in oatmeal. He was of such a density that earth was warm liquid. He lost his fear of death, and felt tempted to stay flying/swimming in the earth, apart from his body. The Priest/Priestess asked what he could do, and S asked to be made more comfortable. He wanted to just sink in and let go completely. He was, strangely, too heavy for a few men to pick up, until he lightened himself up. They were finally convinced to help massage him back into his body, once it was clear they were too uncomfortable with his state to let him stay in it. He continued being fascinated with Hing in Norse mythology, the North, where the serpent swallows his tail. He did not understand what had happened yet, however.

At another time, in a vision, he saw stone "igloos." To see if he was seeing something in the past, he tested with a divining rod and found their imprints. He found a dragon path and followed it. This was when he found the vortex at the tail of the snake, finally understanding that he had become a Pendragon, upon being baptized by the earth. Ley lines were traditionally used for merging with the earth, letting its knowledge into one, and for travel through the earth; some people levitated and traveled above the earth. Communication from one node of the earth's magnetic grid to another is not only possible through ley lines but necessary for stabilization of the earth.

**********

I arrived at the land exhausted from working with people's "demons," freeing them, yet having to use my body as a tuning and filtering device. I had been working under difficult conditions and felt as if I could easily lie down and die. I spent a couple of nights in my van, without much change, but then I stayed at the cabin by the serpent mound the next night. S suggested that I was becoming, "wee." I was continually awakened by a snake in the corner. Whenever I sent Love to it, it would come out of silence and move, probably in appreciation. S finds serpents and brings them to the land. Each time I awakened to its sound, I felt adrenaline in the form of an extreme light. This was the turning point in my healing. I had enough Kundalini energy flowing through me again that I could remember again what it was to be me. Also. I had a healing dream of a place to which I felt connected. When I arrived at the spot later, I recognized it from the dream.

Then I read in the Sacred Path Cards about the Shaman's Death. A shaman confronts the shadows willingly: I was not sure at this point if I were still willing to deal so directly with others' darkness. The book pointed out that many shamans literally die in this work. Yet all the "deaths" he survives, experiencing madness, loneliness, fear, and illness, create understanding of others' sufferings and of how to help. One ritual is the Night of Fear, in which he cannot move from his vulnerable soot in the woods. The mysterious sounds of the night creatures in the darkness help him confront the depths. They therefore act as healers.

And who are the Serpents? Druids, teachers, healers, sharing the name of the serpents, and the serpent energies of the earth and the body. They care-take those places that can help raise the serpent energies of the spine, focus it, clear it, and make it shine.

In the vision in which S saw those ancient stone igloos, he also saw another building on this property, which he thought could perhaps be in the future. It looked like a Nordic Great Hall. It was made of scrap wood, with a kitchen, the feast room, and a second story with artists, craftspeople, cooks, etc., to live. One could have gatherings there, and groups such as the SCR could use it for periods of time, so it could support itself. It would be set up for self-sufficiency, with a wood stove, being near enough to one of the springs on the property for practical water carrying.

Serpent Mounds are magickal places where mysterious occurrences are corroborated, and earth energies flow on in their own beautiful lives.

Blessed be.
