Church of Scientology May Face Charges In Belgium
Belgium prosecutors have concluded an investigation into the activities of the Church of Scientology and are recommending that charges be filed against the church's European office, located in Brussels. Charges would include fraud, extortion and, according to a spokeswoman at the Federal Prosecutors Office, "They also face charges of being...a criminal organisation." In addition, Jean-Claude Van Espen, an investigating prosecutor, has said that up to 12 unamed individuals might be charged. Investigators spent a decade on the case, which began when former members accused the church of swindling them. Prosecuters claim that the organization has engaged in blackmail, fraud, breaking trade and privacy laws, unlawfully practicing medicine and forming a criminal organization.
If the case goes to trial, it would be the first time the movement has been prosecuted on this scale. In some countries, like the U.S., Scientology is recognised as an official religion. However, many EU nations consider Scientology to be a business enterprise that employs unethical practices. Recently, the producers of a film about a plot to kill Adolf Hitler were barred from shooting at military sites in Germany because one of the movie's stars, Tom Cruise, is a Scientologist. Other notable scientologists include John Travolta, Kirstie Alley and Priscilla Presley.
Scientology was founded in 1953 by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. Members undergo expensive training for their spiritual development, but some have accused Scientology of manipulation and brainwashing. Over the years, the church has often been involved in controversy. In 1978, the organization faced charges in the U.S. when prominent members were caught wiretapping, and stealing documents from the IRS.
As of this morning, the European office of the Church of Scientology has not issued a statement on the pending charges. However, in the past, the movement has always issued denials when such allegations have been leveled against it.
