Health/Natural: Feature Article: Identifying Alternative Medicine Treatments by James Brown

Posted on Sunday, October 21, 2007 - 08:04 PM

In some countries, physicians are well trained in alternative medical techniques, and are able to refer their patients to complementary practitioners. In the USA, however, this is very hit and miss.

Identifying Alternative Medicine Treatments

by James Brown

Some physicians have a hard time in identifying alternative medicine treatments because they were not taught them at medical school. They must learn to rely on the text from various researchers who have made it their life work to study such things as the therapeutic alternative medicine treatments that come from herbs, and those that come from various massages.

When identifying alternative medicine treatments, physicians will typically use a hunch, and try some treatments that go right alongside what they have learned but are not clearly written in their medical journals. They might find that acupuncture treatments will help patients with chronic pain, so they give them the usual pain killers to help ease the pain a bit, and make a recommendation that they find a healer who specializes in applying acupuncture therapies to various parts of the body.

The physicians in India are much more likely to begin identifying alternative medicine treatments when they see their patients for the first time. Some alternative medicine is common practice among foreign doctors and is considered quite acceptable as a form of treatment for a variety of illnesses. They will perform the customary office exams to get a complete review of all symptoms before they begin the alternative medicine therapies.

Many insurance companies are very good in identifying alternative medicine treatments that are billed to patients through regular billing practices. They are not, however, very willing to pay for alternative medicine treatments because they are not considered to be acceptable forms of treatment for any type of illness that would be covered under regular medical billing purposes.

Patients must rely on their own sources of funding to pay for the alternative medicine treatments that are used for weeks or months at a time. Identifying alternative medicine treatments that they can afford is the hard part for many patients that are under the care of qualified but unrecognized licensed caregivers.

Most of the alternative medicine patients must deal with the standards of practice of an unregulated industry, and the patient is open to all sorts of unregulated pricing structures at any time during the course of treatment. If all alternative medicine treatments were covered under the auspices of the same standards of care received in many hospitals, then it would keep most of the alternative medicine caregivers from being able to charge what they want to for the services that they provide.

Until then, alternative care patients are at the mercy of an unregulated industry and have no choice but to pay the high prices that are being charged for alternative medicine treatments. Some patients are very hesitant on identifying alternative medicine treatments as any type of complementary care anyone because their treatment on the humane level is far from complimentary.
