No More War Games
by Debora Myers
A mother offers her insight on the issue of violence and children
The world is in an awful state and I must say my piece. The most
powerful tool I can think of for saving the world, or
rather saving humankind, is to simply teach our children
how to love one another. Whether its kids killing each other at
school, or grown lunatics committing genocide, they all lack one
thing: they do not love themselves. What can we do about it? To begin, I would urge all new mothers to
learn from my generations mistakes. Personally, I abhor violent
video and computer games. I have watched childrens eyes become
glazed over as an obsession takes them to shouting, Cool, kill
him! Blow him away! Blow his head off! Violent games, whether
they be on the computer screen or played in the back yard, put our
children in touch with a part of themselves that I believe should not
be encouraged. If we teach our children to play games of cooperation
instead, hopefully someday we can evolve from murderous beasts to
loving spiritual, caring beings.
I know boys and men need to be strong and exercise their strengths as
defenders and bread winners but, as parents, we must also teach them
balance and control, which cant be done if theyre allowed
to plug their minds into killing and maiming. Violent games, combined
with the evil lyrics of the music many of the kids listen to and the
graphic violence of the thriller movies they watch are the reason our
children are cracking.
Moms and dads, unplug your kids from the violence. Get them involved
in positive programs like sports - and start them young! Spend more
time with them by re-prioritizing your
time for what is truly important. Put the next big material purchase
on the back burner, work less and spend the extra hours with your
kids. Monitor what your kids are doing. Lavish love and be attentive
to your children. Dont be afraid to be demonstrative. Hug and
kiss your children, snuggle them down to bed, read stories and be
there for them. Play games with them, go bowling or skating or play
basketball. Most of all keep an open dialogue with them. Ask them
what they are up to. Talk and, more importantly, listen to them.
Love them and they will learn to love. Throw away your guns or lock
them up tightly, and make sure they are disassembled. Know that your
kids are inquisitive and take the measures that will ensure their
safety. Boycott the violent movies and video games!
