What Became of Indians who Defeated Custer?
They Never Surrendered: The Lakota Sioux Band that Stayed in Canada by Ron Papandrea is a mesmerizing historical book that follows the lives of the Lakota Sioux after their astonishing victory at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Custer's defeat, mainly at the hands of Lakota Sioux led by Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse and others, is one of the most famous battles in history. While much is known about the battle, little has been documented about what happened to the Lakota who went to Canada and remained there. Now, in a revealing new book, author Papandrea chronicles how this amazing band struggled and persevered.
The Lakota Sioux not only made it to Canada, but eventually obtained a reservation at Wood Mountain. Papandrea solves the mystery of two famous Lakota chiefs, both of whom were named Black Moon. He reveals it was one of these chiefs, not Sitting Bull, who was the last major Lakota chief to return to the United States; additionally, this same Black Moon took over from Chief Big Foot after Big Foot was killed at the Wounded Knee Massacre.
Beautifully written and thoroughly researched, They Never Surrendered is for anyone who wants to know more about what happened to the victors of the Battle of the Little Big Horn.
Born of Italian-American parents, Ron Papandrea is an attorney and life member of the Custer Battlefield Historical & Museum Association. His haiku poetry has been published in Stroker Magazine. He lives in Warren, Michigan, but likes to roam.
