The ceremony is ideally performed beginning on the first new moon after the winter solstice (the shortest night of the year), but can actually be done at the start of any new moon. The ceremony, also known as "The Festival of Lights," has been continuously in practice for thousands of years predating Christianity. It was given a derogatory designation as a "pagan" ritual when the The Holy Roman Empire sought to obliterate all memory of ancient traditions that seemed to threaten it's absolute power. To be kept alive, it had to be handed down in secret from one spiritual guardian to the next for the past eon or so.
