Books: Book Reveals Different Side of Doubting Thomas

Posted on Tuesday, March 04, 2008 - 02:00 PM

Author Barbara Bode Snyder exposes Thomas as more than a skeptic in her new book, "Thomas the Apostle."

Book Reveals Different Side of Doubting Thomas

Thomas the Apostle by Barbara Bode Snyder offers an inside look into the real life of one the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ. Many know about The Gospel of Thomas, but few know about the man.

In Thomas the Apostle, readers discover the man behind the doubts. The author, who heard firsthand the inspiring legacy of Thomas while living and working in Mylapore, India, relates the apostle's fascinating experiences, which included accompanying Jesus Christ throughout his ministry in Galilee, and bringing the message of Christ first to Parthia and then to South India, where he lived and worked for 20 years before he was martyred in Mylapore.

The Gospel of Thomas and other non-traditional gospels have received much attention in the past few years, and many scholarly books have been written about them. However, this is the first novel ever printed about Thomas and presents him as a real person full of hopes, dreams, and accomplishments.

The author weaves local lore and fact to create a story that is both enlightening and fascinating. The story illustrates that there was more to Thomas than met the eye and there is much to learn from Thomas's travels 2000 years ago and the message he left which is still powerful today in India.

For 20 years, Barbara Bode Snyder taught electronics and computer technology at San Jose City College. During her tenure, she authored several textbooks and workbooks. She also worked as a systems engineer for IBM. She taught Sunday school for 25 years. Today she is an active volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, having served both locally and internationally for many years. She currently resides in San Jose, California.
