Media: Adults Go Back to Kindergarten to Learn Hebrew

Posted on Tuesday, April 01, 2008 - 02:00 PM

"Hebrew Kindergarten," a software program for learning Hebrew, was released in January 2008.

Adults Go Back to Kindergarten to Learn Hebrew

Magicians of all ages are going back to kindergarten. Why?

Ceremonial Magicians who work with the Kabbalah need to learn Hebrew, "the sacred language." But until now they have been wasting their money, and more importantly their time, struggling with complex courses that just don't work. Most beginners never make it past Lesson 2 in any Hebrew course. This can happen because the book is using small or bad print, outdated techniques, and lacks easy-to-use audio and video and interactivity, or it just moves too fast for the average learner.

"Hebrew Kindergarten" was released in January 2008 by http://HebrewResources.com. This course is truly multimedia, including software, printed materials, audio-CDs, flashcards, video chalk-talks (online training sessions), and even MP3 files.

"Hebrew Kindergarten" works, because it uses:

  1. Graduated Interval Recall
  2. Principle of Anticipation (with appropriate amount of repetition)
  3. Core Vocabulary (we specifically select the first few hundred words that any Hebrew kindergartner must learn): Many “travel” and “conversation” courses never teach all these basic words.
  4. Multi-sensory learning: the software, audio and printed material work together to teach different types of learners (audio, visual, kinetic)
  5. The stories are simple and easy to remember. The student will want to read the same stories over and over, and can even learn to read Hebrew without the Nikudot (vowel dots). Beginners always begin with the vowel dots, but Israeli newspapers and periodicals do not include these symbols.

The system is based on 8 stories. The stories introduce parents and their children to the characters David and his sister Channah, as well as Adam and his friend Sarah, and their parents and school teachers.

Story 1 teaches the concept of looking for a lost object. Story 2 teaches the idea of a family working together to build a toy car. Story 3 teaches the thought of mutual understanding using animal pets. Story 4 teaches friendship and play. Story 5 features a day at school. Story 6 teaches the idea of taste and an introduction to several foods and drinks. Story 7 teaches the concept of classroom participation. Story 8 introduces Biblical Hebrew with a simplified version of the Adam and Even being tempted in the garden. The “Hebrew Kindergarten” focuses on the present tense verbs, as well as noun/adjective agreement.

The software was designed with the beginner in mind; it allows the student to point the cursor at any Hebrew word and instantly a pop-up box appears with the transliterated pronunciation (the Hebrew word spelled-out with English letters) and the English meaning of the word. Clicking on the word causes it to be pronounced on the computers speakers.

The student can even click “auto-speak” and sit-back, and listen to the story being read by the computer, while each word is highlighted exactly when it is spoken.

The key concept for learning Hebrew (or any language) in "Hebrew Kindergarten" is carefully timed Repetition. To re-enforce this concept, the software includes games, quizzes, and matching words to well-illustrated pictures from the stories.

After discovering how book buyers love the "Dummy" and "Idiot" books, HebrewResources.com spent three years developing a self-study course called "Hebrew Kindergarten". The program is available with over 200 printed pages, 14 audio CDs (in a easy to carry CD wallet), and one software CD. Visit http://HebrewResources.com to view a video demonstration.
