Environment: The Most Environmentally Friendly Landscaping Tree

Posted on Tuesday, May 27, 2008 - 04:00 PM

The Royal Empress Tree has been dubbed the "wonder tree," providing numerous ecological and environmental benefits. The most recent discovery about this amazing tree is its ability to combat global warming through soil and air purification.

The Most Environmentally Friendly Landscaping Tree

Recent agricultural discoveries have shed new light on how the average homeowner can do their part to combat global warming. Everyone knows the environmental benefit of planting trees, but not everyone knows the best trees to plant. The Royal Empress (Paulownia) Tree was once a godsend for barren lands suffering from erosion, but it also purifies the soil and cleans the air of pollutants and harmful gases more efficiently than any other tree available.

The Royal Empress tree is the fastest growing shade tree in the world, reaching as high as 18 feet tall in the first year. "It offers major benefits to the environment… it's the modern day aspirin for Mother Nature," says Travis Zboch, one of the managers at Fast Growing Trees Nursery.

It has been discovered that Empress Trees improve efficiencies in hardwood harvesting and reforestry, increase crop yields with intercropping and enrich soil composition. In fact, farmers in China are actually using these trees to help in crop cultivation, a process called "intercropping." By placing the crops strategically between the tree lines, they create a wind screen, which helps keep the ground moist and increase nutrients in the soil. The results have been amazing, and since then it has been called "the little tree that saved China."

Royal Empress trees are not only fast growing shade trees, but they also act as giant filters. With their giant leaves and rapid growth rate, they serve to extract pollutants and cleanse the air at an unheard of rate, taking in carbon dioxide and releasing high levels of pure oxygen back into the atmosphere. Because of the uniqueness of this tree's leaves, they can do this ten times faster than most other trees.

By absorbing animal waste and many toxins from the ground, Empress Trees can clean the surrounding soil as well. This benefits not only surrounding plants, but grazing animals that feed on these plants as well.

On a global scale, Empress Trees can combat the deforestation of the rain forest by offering four times more lumber within the same growth period as other commercial trees. They can reach full maturity in just 8-10 years, compared to the 15-18 years it takes commercial trees to mature.

Despite all these amazing findings, homeowners have discovered the Empress Tree for entirely separate reasons.

With the cost of gas is on the rise, homeowners are looking to save a few bucks any way they can. The Empress Tree (aka the Paulownia) creates a dense canopy that provides deep shade, which helps reduce home energy costs up to 25% during the summer. It is a virtually indestructible tree that can withstand temperatures from -10F to over 100F degrees. They have been grown from Mexico to Canada and can be planted any time of the year. The Royal Empress can be grown in full sun or partial shade, and can reach 15-18 feet in a single season.

In fact, many have been planted as shade trees in areas that need unique, mature landscapes in a hurry. For example, after Hurricane Katrina, many residents of New Orleans have been amazed at the growth of their new Empress Trees.
