Internet: Learning To Live Smart and Green

Posted on Friday, July 04, 2008 - 06:00 PM

The Weather Channel's "Forecast Earth" has beed redesigned, offering expanded environmental coverage on how to "live smart" and stay green

Learning To Live Smart and Green

Visitors to Forecast Earth, the interactive broadband site dedicated to climate change issues created by The Weather Channel Interactive, can now find new content on how to "live smart" and stay green in an entirely redesigned and easy-to-navigate site. The redesigned Web site contains practical information to help consumers live well, reduce waste, save money and sustain the planet. Additionally, a roster of new bloggers provides perspective and commentary on environmental issues. Eco-friendly lifestyle tips and features can also be found directly from weather.com.

The Forecast Earth site was created two years ago as the premiere broadband channel designed to start a dialogue and humanize the impact of climate change. Keeping that goal in mind, the site's redesign eases overall navigation of articles, tools and videos. The front page of Forecast Earth now contains continuously updated information and links to the newest videos from the Forecast Earth team. The highlight of the redesign is a new section entitled "Living Smart" with content on driving, home, travel and health.

This eco-minded content can be found not only at the Forecast Earth site, but also throughout weather.com. New content ranging from smaller, "light" green efforts to more involved "deep" green discussions are now located on a variety of channels within weather.com.

This includes:

  • Driving: Learn how your choice of vehicle has an impact on the environment and on your wallet with information on estimated annual fuel costs and air pollution ratings for hundreds of vehicles. Read about clean, electric and hybrid vehicles.
  • Home and Garden: Learn some home improvements to help save energy and money while protecting our environment. Articles include topics such as gardening and severe weather preparation tips.
  • Travel: Explore 10 of the world's most eco-friendly destinations or find advice and resources to help plan a perfect -- yet responsible -- getaway. Read articles on the growth and popularity of ecotourism.

New Blogs Provide Expert Commentary

The Forecast Earth site continues to provide a forum for commentary on climate change and environmental topics. Today's announcement brings with it a roster of new bloggers providing unique green living perspectives on everything from cooking and climate science to technology and autos.

The latest bloggers to join the Forecast Earth community include:

  • James Hrynyshyn is an independent science journalist who follows climate science closely. With degrees in both marine biology and journalism, he has worked as a reporter and editor on the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic coasts. His work has appeared in "New Scientist," "SEED," "Science & Spirit" and "Canadian Geographic," among others.
  • Jay Weinstein is a professional chef, journalist and author. He was most recently executive editor of The Culinary Institute of America newsletter. Some of his articles, recipes and commentary have been featured in The New York Times, Travel & Leisure, Newsday, Time Out New York, National Geographic Traveler, and NPR's "All Things Considered."
  • Don Willmott reports on the Internet, computer technology, consumer electronics, travel, and environmental issues for a wide variety of publications and Web sites. He previously worked as Yahoo! Internet Life's Technology Editor and oversaw the magazine's annual survey of America's Most Wired Cities.
  • Alex Nunez is an automotive writer interested in green topics. He has contributed to and served as associate editor of Autoblog.com and its sister site, AutoblogGreen.com, since 2006.

A leader in the area of climate change and the environment, The Weather Channel airs Forecast Earth, an original weekly program where climate news meets green living. The one-hour program airs Saturday and Sunday at 5 p.m., 7 p.m. and 1 a.m. ET. The television show and its Web site enable viewers to become even more knowledgeable about environmental issues and what they can do to make a difference. A broadcast journalist for 23 years, Natalie Allen anchors and reports from the field. The show's climate expert, Dr. Heidi Cullen, has been with The Weather Channel since 2003 and has the key responsibility of adding explanation, depth and perspective to climate stories.
