Books: Britney, Paris, and Other Celebrities Embrace Self Help Book

Posted on Friday, August 01, 2008 - 09:48 PM

It's summertime and self-help obsessed celebs are looking for good beach reads. Stars like Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Oprah, Nicole Kidman, Fergie, and Meg Ryan have all been spotted reading the self-help tome by Denise Coates to attract their desires. The only question is: What more could these stars want?

Britney, Paris, and Other Celebrities Embrace Self Help Book

Maybe stars are more like us than we realize. When we're feeling stuck in some area of our lives, many of us look for answers by perusing the self-help section of our local Barnes and Nobles. With the latest trend of celebrities buying and even endorsing self-improvement literature, regular folks who read about how to spice up their love lives or manifest more money may just spot a famous face pouring through the same self improvement books as them.

This is an interesting trend. Stars who seem to have it all (looks, money, fame, supportive families, and creative fulfillment) are still looking for ways to improve themselves by reading books that promise the good life (or, in their case, an "even better" life). Oprah Winfrey has become a very public advocate of Eckhart Tolle's spiritual books, even going so far as to sponsor globally telecast online workshops with the spiritual teacher. In her decades as a journalist, Oprah says endorsing Tolle has been the most important thing she's ever done. Many famous faces have endorsed the now legendary self help book, The Secret, including Winfrey, Britney Spears and Nicole Kidman. Even Paris Hilton claims The Secret was one of two books that helped her stay strong while serving jail time.

The latest uber-trendy book becoming hip with the celeb crowd is called Feel it Real! A Guided Approach To Bringing The Law of Attraction Into Your Life by Denise Coates; a book that claims to help readers manifest more joy, money, health, romance, and career success into their lives by pretending they already have their desires. It consists of fifty games the reader plays in order to "shift their vibration" to feel like their desires have already manifested. Coates claims that "when you imagine you already have your desires, you shift your body chemistry and your moods lift." She also claims that by focusing on one's desires as if they are already here, one invokes the "Law of Attraction'(made famous by The Secret) to magically draw their desires to them.

Feel it Real's sudden popularity could be due to the fact that it gives readers hope and faith during these trying economic times. It endorses a sense of personal empowerment which is something our downtrodden country may look to in order to keep from feeling hopeless. Or maybe it is simply getting popular because celebrities have made Feel it Real! the "It" book of summer.

Either way, it is an interesting phenomenon that celebs who have been spotted reading Feel it Real! (Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, Meg Ryan, Nicole Kidman, and Sarah Ferguson, among others) have any material desires left to fulfill. What could these stars possibly want more of? It is feasible to say that Britney could use more self love or she could use Feel it Real! to help her visualize her custody court cases going well. But what about Oprah, who brought the Law of Attraction into our homes when she had The Secret authors on her show? She may have been trying to help others learn to improve their lives, which is applaudable. But personally, what else could she want?

Maybe the answer is that no matter how much good fortune anyone has in his or her life, there is always going to be something new to wish for; some new dream to strive towards. Somehow, this makes the celebrities seem downright human; just like the rest of us.
