Category: Start / Culture & CommunityAn editorial listing of alternative web sites that have to do culture and community. None of the sites in this section are part of a "link exchange." Every site in this section has been approved by our editorial staff as a site we can recommend. Sort links by: Title ( + | - ) Date ( + | - ) Rating ( + | - ) Popularity ( + | - ) Sites currently sorted by: Title (Z to A) This is a great site for writers and readers alike, and it’s another place to occasionally read articles by our editor! Although they don’t pay as yet (they hope to be able to in the future), it’s a great place for beginning writers to get some exposure. Plus, every month they have a poetry contest where the first place winner walks away with $100. If you’re a reader who would like to support writers painlessly, tell all of your friends about this site and click on it often (so they can start generating some advertising revenue). This site is also upgraded frequently. Added on: 18-Jul-2003 | hits: 184 Rate this web site | Modify | Report broken link | Details
The subtitle of this site is: "Organization for Christian Polygamy." Now, the way we see it is that most of us have enough trouble maintaining a sane and healthy relationship with just one person. But since we believe in freedom and all, we figure that if you want to have multiple husbands or wives, who are we to say no. Anyway, we're not going to rate this one - figuring it best to leave it to you to decide. Added on: 08-Sep-2007 | hits: 172 Rate this web site | Modify | Report broken link | Details
Many people think that if it hadn’t been for the Diggers, such landmark events as the Summer of Love and the Electric Cool Aid Acid Tests wouldn’t have happened. This from an organization (or non-organization, as we would’ve said in those days) that ceased to exist by 1968, at the very latest. This site proves that you can’t keep a good organization down. Included are all of the Diggers published writing, as well as bulletin boards and a virtual “Free Store.” Bookmark it, and go back often. The site purports to be “your resource for advice on love and relationships.” Full of great articles and advice, we especially enjoyed taking the questionaire, but give yourself plenty of time...and be honest! Okay, here's another one of those "everything you ever wanted to know about" sites. On this one, the focus is on the homeless, the street people who always have an interesting story when hitting you up for a dollar. The site is somewhat controversial - for several reasons. To begin with, the site approaches homelessness through humor. More damning to the politically correct, the site recognizes the fact that not all street people are victims of circumstance. In the words of the site: "While some may find this approach deplorable and argue that painting all homeless people with the same brush is unfair and only serves to reinforce stereotypes, we contend that it is just as unfair to portray all homeless people as needy individuals that just need a helping hand to get their lives back on track. The simple fact is there ARE individuals who, for a multitude of reasons, cannot be helped or do not want it, preferring instead to take advantage of the compassion and generosity of others." Mean spirited? We'll leave it to you to decide. Added on: 03-Sep-2007 | hits: 158 Rate this web site | Modify | Report broken link | Details
This is a very slick site that claims to be a service to the intelligence community. In fact, the slickness of the presentation suggests that folks like you and me are the target audience. Anyway, there's tons of interesting stuff here, and it seems to be updated often. If you're one of those people who think that there's a lot of truth woven into the fiction in "The X Files," or if you think "The Matrix" is based on solid yet secret scientific research, then this site is for you. Four out of Five Stars. Added on: 24-Jun-2007 | hits: 411 Rate this web site | Modify | Report broken link | Details
A web site from the folks who publish New Renaissance magazine. This is a very in-depth site, with an extremely wide variety of articles on a number of alternative topics – including Animal Rights, Ecology, Economics and more. Five out of five stars! The content of this site from the U.K. reminds us of the underground press of old. Articles on everything from organic farming to awareness. Added on: 18-Jul-2003 | hits: 206 Rate this web site | Modify | Report broken link | Details
This is the online site for the Austrailian print magazine New Dawn, "A Journal of Alternative News & Information." The contents run the gamut from politics to culture to spirituality - all with an alternative bent (meaning they'll tell what the Times won't). Because they need to sell magazines, they only offer online access to about a third of each issues contents - but we all have to pay rent. Four out of Five Stars.
