Mandate for Clean Energy

ObamaEnergy policy has never been more prominent in a national election, and rarely have the results been so clear.

Voters strongly rejected the failed energy policies of the last eight years and issued a historic mandate for large-scale, transformational change. They signaled that they want a fundamentally different policy — one that aggressively invests in clean and energy-efficient infrastructure, creates green-collar jobs, fights global warming, and strengthens our economy.

We congratulate President-Elect Barack Obama and thank him for the candor and maturity to tell us in his acceptance speech that our work has only begun:

You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead...There's new energy to harness, new jobs to be created, new schools to build, and threats to meet, alliances to repair. The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us to make that change.

We look forward to working with you, President-Elect Obama and the new leadership in Washington to make that climb.

Government and Industry Greening Chinese Banks

China BankFriends of the Earth has just released a new report, entitled The Green Evolution, Environmental Policies and Practice in China’s Banking Sector, which overviews the efforts to green Chinese finance since the Chinese government released new environmental regulations for financial institutions. Chinese banks are playing an increasingly important role in financing large infrastructure and natural resource projects throughout the world, often without the social and environmental standards necessary to protect local communities and ecosystems. The Green Evolution is an update to our 2007 report, Time to Go Green.

Energy Don't Dump on Nevada

Erich PicaFriends of the Earth, along with the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada and the Sierra Club, launched a coordinated media campaign last week warning that transporting dangerous nuclear waste to the proposed Yucca Mountain waste dump is a recipe for disaster.

Erich Pica, our Economic Program Director, traveled to Reno and Las Vegas, Nevada, where he did interviews on TV and radio. The campaign also increased its audience by producing print and radio advertisements in English and Spanish. We've also launched a website: http://www.dontdumponnevada.org. The ads and the website warn that highly toxic radioactive waste does not belong on our railroads and highways.

The federal Surface Transportation Board is now considering holding public hearings about a rail line that could be used to transport this waste. Right now, we need your comments! Please contact the board by clicking here.

Warming Means War

Friends of the Earth and Voters for Peace have joined together to form the Climate Security Project.  We are bringing the environmental and peace movements together to advocate for policies that protect U.S. national security by rapidly addressing climate change. Our effort begins with a challenge to the notion of "energy independence." The phrase "energy independence" touted by the candidates and repeated by the media does not mean independence from fossil fuels, only from foreign sources--which does nothing to solve our current energy problems. We need to urge the media to stop conflating energy independence with energy security.

Global Warming Urge the New President to Commit To Poland

Friends of the Earth teamed up with OxFam, 350.org, Avaaz and others, to organize a petition to the Presidential candidates, urging them to explicitly state that they will attend the United Nations Climate Change conference. In the time before the election, we successfully sent over 15,000 invitations.

Now, we are asking the President-Elect Obama to attend the U.N. conference to let the world know we are finally willing to take responsibility for our emissions and play a leadership role in solving climate change.
